Website launched

Finally, after a whole load of head scratching and wondering what the heck I was doing, I launched my very own website last night.

www.bluebell-design.com

It's mainly going to be used as an advert for the business right now, but I intend to set it up as a selling tool as well, for one-off items I make as and when I have the time to make them. I'm giving myself a little break before I have to think that hard again though!

I planned to launch it at the beginning of 2010, and I actually (shock horror) beat my own deadline by a day!

Birthday party for a dinosaur

It's still cold, the snow partly thawed and then refroze so all pavements are death traps of 1 inch thick pure ice, with the roads in some instances not being much better. Still, it's a lot better than torrential rain in my opinion. The sun's even peeked out from the clouds today.

Today was my four year old neice's 4th birthday, so we spent an hour or two watching her open presents, fall down the stairs (no damage done to neice or stairs), race around the house with her brother, sister and I think 20 other kids ranging from 2 years old to 15, and then be a very noisy dinosaur with another three yelling kids for a while. By the time we left them all behind I was absolutely exhausted and all I'd done is watch them and talk to one of the other adults there.....

Cats are so much quieter.

With regards my mini-treasury, today is all about me.

I've spent today reviewing my Etsy shop and changing the photos round a bit, to hopefully bring a few more people in to take a look and persuade them that they really want one of my bags!

A bit of retro glamour

We're still deep in snow here in central Scotland, although it's now raining. As it's 11pm, it'll either melt the snow completely overnight or (more likely) freeze it into a solid sheet of ice. Either way, we're about to lose all that lovely crisp and fluffy snow.

My Etsy selection today came about from some idle wandering about the site. I realised that this season is all about reds and greens and golds and I just felt like a bit of pink and blue. I have no idea why, but I just did. So here it is, a touch of vintage combined with a smidgen of modern, but all in beautiful springlike tones. If only.....

Raffle prizes awarded

A few weeks ago I was part of a three day craft event. As part of my "shop" I held a raffle in aid of Alzheimers Scotland, with three prizes.

First prize was a set of Dickensian Mice hand knitted by Mum from an Alan Dart pattern. She spent about 6 weeks on these and the end results were so fantastic that I used them as my window display, making scenery out of a cardboard box, coloured paper and some kapok stuffing for the snow.

Second prize was one my Loopy bags, a sky blue one with a blue gingham lining, whilst third prize was hand knitted turquoise fingerless mitts.

Winning tickets were drawn yesterday, 19th December, as that's Dad's birthday and he's the reason behind the charity of choice.

Both first and second prizes were won by people in Limekilns, and it's of special delight that first prize was won by one of the children who fell in love with the mice and wanted so much to win them. Nadia came with her mum Tracey this morning to collect their little mice, and it's with Tracey's permission that I publish this photograph of her.

Winter comforts

After yesterday's snowfall and the overnight freeze, the main objective today for most people was staying upright on the pavements. I had to visit Dunfermline for a few errands and was happy striding around in my Doc Martin boots, but I certainly saw a few people skidding about in trainers and other lighter shoes.

This evening we had our own experience of the ice-rink, as we were off to our usual circuits class and discovered just how slippery the pavements and car parks are in trainers. Our wee square was like a skating rink and the car park in Rosyth was absolutely treacherous.

Andrew came home early from his usual Friday job today, as the ground was too frozen to do anything constructive. He did a bit of snow clearing from paths and steps and then called it a day, but was presented with a large box on leaving. This large box turned out to be a Fortnum and Mason hamper, containing four bottles of extremely nice looking wine, a massive half York ham (2.8 kilos of ham!!!), a large box of crystalised prunes d'agen and pots of fois gras, tapenade and salmon roe. We're both absolutely speechless at the generosity, and will certainly do our best to enjoy this gift fully over the coming weeks.

A major comfort at this time of year is a good old cup of tea. Who doesn't enjoy sitting down with a cuppa to enjoy a book or tv show? Todays selection is all about the lowly teapot and how some very talented ceramic artists have taken the design beyond the expected and into a whole new realm.

Winter's here at last

We had our first snowfall of the season today, great fat flakes of snow that were followed by bucketloads of hailstones before reverting back to snow again. And then it rained. The snow is more or less all gone and our wee street now has that slightly grubby look streets get when the snow leaves. Still, it was pretty for a while!

I've been inspired by the snowfall today to look at the art catergory on Etsy, in particular wintery art. I've definitely got an eye for the whimsical, and my choices reflect that. Art is one of the most subjective things on earth, so of course there's a chance some folk may hate my choices. But ultimately, it's my blog and therefore I get to show what I want!

Christmas indulgence

Today's moodboard is the result of a lovely evening spent in the local pub, the Ship Inn,  with old friends, sharing laughter, gossip and a lot of silly nonsense. In other words, it was perfect.

At present I'm strictly a non-alchoholic gal, but temptation was strong (red wine and gin & bitter lemon were both equally tempting). In respect of this, I searched Etsy for some alcohol free indulgences that would, perhaps, make up for missing out on the mulled wine this winter....

First off, we have Lime Margarita body scrub from www.etsy.com/shop/crystalwood

Champagne soap from www.etsy.com/shop/simplysuds

Kir Royale body wash from www.etsy.com/shop/pureintox

and last but not least, Limoncello lip balm in tin from www.etsy.com/shop/nettiescrub

All pampering, indulgent treats for us non-drinkers!

Keeping the tree unscathed...

At this time of year, most cats have one thing in mind - scaling the christmas tree. Fortunately, our two are both a bit cynical and jaded about christmas, with Pixie happy to snooze besides the tree with barely a glance at the tinkly twinkly bits. Iggy had a lovely fight with a piece of red tinsel and still looks longingly at it, but has resisted temptation so far.

For those who share their lives with younger, more curious felines, today's moodboard shows some fab ways of moving their attention elsewhere. I'm a particular fan of the eyeballs!

December frosts....

Today's been absolutely freezing, with dense fog and the trees coated with a thin blanket of frosted ice.

A frequent Sunday walk is round Broomhall Estate in a loop, which takes us (joy of joys) past the Ship Inn about quarter of a mile from home. We'd decided that we'd definitely stop for a coffee and to write our christmas cards here today - it was so nice to get in out of the cold.

On our walk we stopped to look at a frozen seed head and were startled by the appearance of a stoat charging across the road besides us and into the grass directly in front of us. It then stopped to check us out before obviously coming to the conclusion that we were of no interest and off it disappeared again into the undergrowth.

For a long time on our walk the only sounds were the seagulls that had found themselves fog-bound on a large pool of rainwater that had flooded one of the fields, and a distant booming (I don't even want to know what they were up to) from Rosyth Dockyard. Other than that, we might have been the only people in the world, with no sounds and of course no sights due to the dense fog.

In homage to the freeze, today's moodboard is knitted gloves. It's been surprisingly hard to find items in this category on Etsy that were attractively photographed. Many photos were pretty bad, often out of focus and dark, and some dark gloves had a dark background making it hard to see exactly what they actually looked like. It often appears that the photographer is also the model, so that's quite possibly the main cause of these problems.

Blog statement

My little blog appears to be attracting a bit of attention (which of course is lovely) and receiving a few comments (again, all lovely - so far) but one thing I'm not keen on receiving is comments with an advert for a commercial website attached that has absolutely nothing to do with me or the artists I've featured.

I'm not here to advertise for you - I'm here to show what I've been doing and to run a little gallery hosting for some very talented artists who I've found on my journey.

So, apologies to the person who DID leave a comment with a link to their commercial website, but this kind of post will never be published here, except in exceptional circumstances (ie I know the business owner and I'm doing them a favour).

So there.

I hate bloody banks

Today I finished (can I have a whoopee please?) the wicker chair cushion. I was getting truly frustrated with the covered buttons as I couldn't get the backs off to recover them and didn't have the same size new in stock. After a think I realised that I didn't actually need to do them all taht neatly, as they're sewn onto the arms to pull the stuffing in quite significantly - unless they do a LOT of really thorough digging there's no way they'll be able to see the backs of them. It was then just a case of recovering them, leaving the edges raw and open at the back but giving them a wee coat of fraycheck, and then stitching the darn things on and.......voila, finis.

Next job tackled was a satin dress alteration for a new client. 18 months ago, this lady was 21 stone and since then has lost a significant amount of weight. The dress she brought to me was her "incentive" dress, a red strapless cocktail length number which she bought online from (surprise surprise) China before she began to lose the weight. Apparently it has already been taken in a couple of times as she's lost the weight, but now it's just the bust area that was causing a problem. In total I've removed 12cm of fabric from the top line of the bust to stop it gaping open (never a good look) or falling down (again, not to be recommended at an army dance, which is where she's off to on Saturday).

The rest of today was spent arguing with Lloyds TSB who have totally pissed me off by charging me £12 for non payment of a bill that I never received. I called about it last week and was told that the statement had been returned to them unopened and that they'd unblock my card straight away. I asked about paying and they said they'd send out a new statement within the next day or two.

It arrived today. Complete with a threatening letter from their "Collections department" AND a £12 non-payment fee.

50 frustrating minutes later, having spoken to 5 (count 'em) FIVE different people who ALL wanted me to pay this £12 as I hadn't paid my bill on time (allegedly not having a statement asking for money is no reason not to pay - I should have just KNOWN by osmosis or something what I needed to pay and when) I gave up and went up to the local branch where a lovely lady had it sorted out for me in less than 5 minutes.

5 minutes and the original 50 on the phone, plus the time taken to get up and down from the town. Perhaps I should charge them for it?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Today's moodboard consists of some lovely calming shades of duck egg and turquoise in counterpoint to my seething spirit.

And relax.

Fear and mauve

Today was dead exciting. No I mean it. Really.

Ok, no I'm lying. It was absolutely mind numbingly boring, re-covering an awkwardly shaped cushion from a large wicker chair, that not only needed self piping but has a deep "crater" around the curved back that needs the fabric held into by stitching. And it won't fit under my machine arm. Guess I'm sewing it by hand then, aren't it?

Tonight I'm getting a bit of physio to try to get my painful back sorted out. I'm a bit scared as I've never had physio but everyone I tell does that sucking-of-breath-ooooh-you're-going-to-huuuuuurrrrrrrt thing.

To cheer me up I've based today's mini treasury on one of my own bags, a lovely wee mauve knitted bag with a mohair flower and pewter lining. I love mauve - it's such a peaceful colour and one I've recently used to paint our bathroom. Hubby was hoping for something a little more blue than pink, but I "accidentally" chose a paint that's pinker than blue.

Oops.

Wish me luck for tonight.....

Cosy on up

I seem to be useless at getting a treasury on Etsy, as it definitely seems to be a matter of hanging around for hours waiting to swoop. I can't do that, as the pc's downstairs and I work upstairs, so I've decided to make my own little treasuries on my blog. I can still pick my favourites without waiting till 2am for a slot to open up.

I love picking the theme and finding gorgeous items to work within it. The photo idea was inspired by Anna at The House of Mouse (www.etsy.com/shop/thehouseofmouse) who used the idea on her blog. I can't believe I didn't think of it myself, but there you go. I've spent too many days immersed in my own wee bit of the craft world without opening my eyes to the rest of it.

Anyway, here's todays wee treasury, inspired by a need to cosy on up in the below freezing temperatures here on the east coast of Scotland....

Phew

Well that's the entire week over, cleared up and more or less recovered from.

I'm already looking forward to next year and am making plans for new products and ways to lay out the room. I'm going to see if I can get a sofa into the room as that might encourage people to linger. I'm also going to think seriously about the glass of wine idea - Ruth offers this and it seems to keep people browsing for a lot longer as they don't seem to like to put it down undrunk if they've been offered it and accepted. I'm going to trap them!

The entire experience has been totally exhausting and I'm still absolutely flattened by it all, but it was brilliant and well worth it all.

Today I was out and about delivering quotes and had a cuppa with a friend, who this year lost her beloved hubby. Her greyhound, Dennis, is normally quite timid when we meet outside, but in his own home he's proved to be a complete clown. His latest "oddity" is to take a couple of potatoes to bed with him (no I'm not joking). Every morning Lynn goes into the kitchen and his beanbag contains Dennis and two raw and dirty potatoes from the sack.

We took our tea into the living room, where Dennis joined me on the sofa. Actually, joined isn't the right word. Basically he sat on my lap with his head on my shoulder. Lynn's convinced he thinks he's a jack russell. He's bloody heavy!!!

I'll get some photos of the craft show up tomorrow, if I remember to download everything from the camera.

Over and out.
